Types of Vacuum Cleaners

There are five types of vacuum cleaners:

  • Upright Vacuum Cleaner
  • Cylinder vacuum Cleaner
  • Stick Vacuum Cleaner
  • Handheld Vacuum Cleaner
  • Robot Vacuum Cleaner

Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Upright Vacuum Cleaners are popular for using in the home. They are the best to use when your flooring is mainly carpet. This is because these vacuums are the most powerful.  As the brush combs the pile and removed the dirt from the carpet.

Using an upright vacuum means that you are not pulling the vacuum along behind you. They are therefore easy to use to clean large carpet areas. They generally have a larger cleaning path than cylinder vacuums. To use these vacuums you have to pull the vacuum back and forth.  Which can be a problem with the weight of the machine. The Upright vacuum cleaners are better on the back to use.  This is because there is less bending involved when using them. They are also difficult to use and carry up the stairs.  Can also be difficult when cleaning under furniture.  Generally, upright vacuums are easier to control and to store.

Generally, upright vacuums have larger vacuum cleaner bag or dust containers than cylinder vacuums. So you need to changing or emptying them less frequently.

They are more economical than cylinder vacuums. The newer models, which are bagless, have become increasing popular. Cleaning the car can be difficult with them.  Unless they have an attached wand with extended reach.

If you intend to use them on hardwood floor.  Make sure they have soft brush bristles so they do not scratch the floors. Many of upright models have rotating brushes, which are ideal for pet hair removal. Look out for accessories such as crevice tool, dusting and wand attachments. Some upright vacuums have flexible hoses with attachments. These models provide the power of the upright vacuum and the versatility of a cylinder cleaner. The tools on the cleaner will clean in awkward corners and on stairs.

Cylinder vacuum cleaner

Cylinder vacuum cleaners use a wand attached to a flexible hose for vacuuming. They are lighter and easier to control than upright vacuums. Better than uprights on hard floor surfaces but less good on carpets. They tend to be more expensive than upright vacuum cleaners. They are easier to use to clean stairs.  Because of their low profile easier to clean under furniture.

Cylinder vacuums can be effective on all floors if they have a turbo brush attachment for cleaning carpet. They can come with different attachments.  They are for use on many surfaces including carpets, hardwood floors and tiles. You can also use the vacuum to clean curtains and upholstery.

They tend to be lighter and take up less space than upright vacuum cleaners. Most models will feature a cord rewind, foot operated start, and stop pedals. They are ideal for cleaning awkward to get to spaces.

Stick vacuum cleaners

Also known as electric brooms they are a type of lightweight upright vacuum. They are best suited for cleaning hard floors and light rug areas. They are not practical for cleaning large carpets floors.  This is because they can only clean a small path. They will glide more easily over wooden or tiled floors. They are often cordless and bagless. This type of vacuum is good for quick pickups from the floor. They are not as powerful as an upright vacuum.  The dust canister is smaller in these vacuums.

They are best designed for light duty cleaning and are not adequate for deep carpet cleaning. Their lightweight design makes them ideal to clean up small amount of dust and debris more frequently.  Particularly when you do not want to use your main vacuum cleaner. Often purchased as a second vacuum cleaner, they are also ideal for small flats where storage space is limited.

Handheld vacuum cleaners

Handheld vacuum cleaners are held in your hand as you clean.  Used often as a second vacuum alongside an upright vacuum cleaner. You can use them for small clean up jobs around your home and for cleaning your car. Their portability makes them useful to clean up small spills. Also useful for cleaning up small messes created by hobbies and craft work. They are small, light, generally bagless and mainly cordless. They are not as powerful as larger vacuum cleaners. The dirt container is only small and collects in a small removable container. Often used for cleaning hard to reach area like stairs, caravan or car interiors.

Handheld vacuums are inexpensive and come as both cord and cordless models. The battery models generally have charging stands to charge the handheld cleaner. The cleaner can also be stored on the stand when not in use. The battery life varies between models. Handheld, corded cleaners tend to be a bit more powerful than the battery operated ones, but make sure you have sufficient cord length.

Robot Vacuum Cleaner

A Robot Vacuum Cleaner is a vacuum, which operates automatically. They are a time saving device. You program instructions into the devices remote control or console. The vacuum cleans floors while you are out of the room. The vacuum cleaner will complete the programmed circuits and then switch itself off. It is complete with sensors, which can stop it bumping into walls and furniture. Robotic vacuum cleaners can clean all your floor surfaces including carpets, wooden floors and tiles.

The robots vacuum power will only give a light clean of surface dust and dirt.  You will still need to make regular cleans with your main vacuum cleaner. The low profile of the vacuum allows it to operate under nearly all of your furniture. You end up cleaning your floors more often than before.  This is because once you set the robot vacuum going it will complete the cleaning without any further assistance.
